Three Year Vision – The Bedrock of Your Growth

On this 293rd episode of Take Flight Weekly, I'm tackling one of the biggest challenges I face as a coach, leader, and mentor, and that's convincing real estate professionals and entrepreneurs to commit to a 3-Year Vision. Most real estate professionals and entrepreneurs love to jump straight to action. They want to check boxes, move the ball forward, and get the quick win. When evaluating elite level producers, those who consistently perform at the top 1-3% operate differently. They start with clarity. They build a "north star" that guides every decision. Today, I'm reframing how you think about vision so your focus stays locked on the version of yourself you want to become and the business you want to build rather than just the tasks on your to-do list.

Before we dive in, let me remind you of my purpose: to help you, the full-service, full-fee advisor and entrepreneur, become more productive and more fulfilled. Why? Because happy advisors and entrepreneurs produce more. Consider this your personal coaching session.

The difference between good and extraordinary isn't talent.

Extraordinary performance begins in the mind long before it shows up in your numbers. Vision is the ultimate force multiplier because it pulls you forward, fuels your decisions, and gives every action meaning. Without it, you are just reacting to the next email, the next call, the next market shift. When your vision is clear, your daily grind transforms into deliberate progress. This is not about taking time away from revenue generating activities. It is about making sure every move you make compounds toward the future you have already decided is yours. The top performers are not just chasing transactions. They are building a legacy, and it starts with the picture they have already painted in their mind.

The Real Reason You Resist Vision Engineering

Your brain is wired to keep you safe, which means keeping you exactly where you are. Thinking beyond your current reality is inherently uncomfortable because it requires you to challenge the person you are today.

I see this resistance manifest in ten predictable ways:

  • Lack of clarity about what you actually want
  • Fear of failure that stops you before you start
  • Overwhelm at the scope of three years
  • Limiting beliefs about what you deserve
  • No emotional connection to the outcome
  • Short-term thinking that can’t see past the next quarter
  • Fear of commitment to something long-term
  • Outside noise drowning out your authentic desires
  • Past disappointments creating hesitation
  • No clear path from here to there

Sound familiar? This is your brain's defense mechanism at work. But here's what I've learned after four complete vision cycles: my most successful business planning years always followed my clearest visions.

When you can see, feel, and practically taste the future you're building, everything changes.

Why 3-Year Vision Creates Exponential Results

A compelling vision does seven things that tactical planning alone cannot:

Creates a Clear Target. It transforms vague aspirations into something tangible you can build toward.

Provides Laser Focus. It becomes your filter for every opportunity and decision—does this align with where I’m going, or is it just noise?

Energizes Your Actions. A powerful vision doesn’t push you forward—it pulls you. There’s a magnetic quality to clarity.

Drives Exponential Growth. Instead of incremental improvement, vision thinking opens up 10x possibilities.

Builds Real Accountability. When you write it down and review it consistently, it becomes impossible to ignore.

Simplifies Complex Decisions. Every choice gets run through one simple filter—does this move me toward my vision?

Unlocks Creative Solutions. The future becomes a place you create from, not just a destination you hope to reach.

The 7-Step Vision Framework

If you're ready to do this work, here are the 7 steps I use:

  1. Block Serious TimeSchedule 3-8 hours of uninterrupted time. This isn’t something you squeeze between meetings.
  2. Change Your EnvironmentGet out of your normal setting. Go somewhere that inspires bigger thinking.
  3. Go Into Deep Work ModeTurn off everything. No phone, no notifications, no interruptions.
  4. Ask Powerful Questions
  • How do I want to live three years from now?
  • Who do I want to become?
  • What do I want?
  • What would have to happen for me to feel I made major progress?
  1. Define Your TargetsWrite down five personal and five professional goals. Keep it focused.
  2. Make It DailyReview your vision every single day. Keep it visible and top of mind.
  3. Recommit QuarterlyUse your regular planning rhythm to ensure continued alignment.

Think “Version,” Not Just Vision

Here's a reframe that might help: instead of "3-Year Vision," think "3-Year Version."

You're not just planning goals. You're deciding who you'll be when 2028 arrives. What will that version of you think?  How will they make decisions?  What standards will they hold?

That future version of yourself should be driving your 2026 plan, not the reactive person dealing with today's pressures.

The Foundation of Everything Else

Creating a 3-Year Vision isn't just another planning exercise.  It's the bedrock that makes everything else possible. Without this clarity, your business planning becomes a collection of disconnected tactics.

Your vision is what turns strategy into momentum. It's what keeps you aligned when markets shift and opportunities distract. As we approach planning season, the question isn't whether you have time for vision work. The question is whether you can afford to plan without it.

The elite level producers already know the answer.  They see it in their mind before they ever see it in their reality.
